Solution: Work around the problem while breaking something else, but in such a subtle way that I don't notice it's broken for several months, and get to believe I have a working solution for good.
sometimes i wonder if i got a little too good at booting from liveusb, LUKS unlocking all the correct disks, mounting everything and fixing the system from there
