Survey/Interview questions about Smart Home Devices
Have to get a couple responses to these for uni assignments, but I'm also genuinely curious
- What kind of smart home devices (electronic stuff that communicates with eachother/apps etc) do you have?
- What kind of existing devices would you like to have?
- What kind of features would you like a hypothetical smart device to bring you?
- Do you have concerns with smart devices?

@f0x Zigbee based stuff is what i'm aiming for, that talks directly to my raspberry pi running Home Assistant
zigbee or other similar protocols that don't hook into wifi so they're not on my LAN strongly preferred
have a homebrewed esp32 for some light level monitoring and automations, zigbee compatible bulbs, and switches, motion sensors and temp/humid/pressure sensors :)

@f0x I'm looking forwards to some esp32 chips that are coming out with zigbee integration, cuz homebrewing stuff for that sounds fuuuuuun
And as for concerns, well, philips burnt some trust for me when i got their hub -- my home assistant, after spotting it on the LAN, alerted me that the device was vulnerable and to update the firmware immediately
Hue's software tho? No urgency. Update was optional. NO metnion of the vuln

- none
- maybe a mycroft but idk honestly
- be fully auditable, work with awoocloud, be actually made by people who understand security at like, any level tbh
- lots. my experience hacking iot shit has shown that many devices are very trivially insecure or a privacy concern (big companies tend to be more secure but will still harvest the heck out of you for advertising). the landscape of devices that are both secure and private is basically nothing. even if you don't own any devices, there's stuff like amazon sidewalk that threatens you anyway if eg your neighbors have amazon devices. the whole thing is just really scary

@f0x We have around fifty ZigBee lights, door sensors, thermostats, etc; a few dozen wifi thingies (dashboards, clocks, power meters, plant monitors, appliances, etc); and a dozen Ethernet connected units (AP, cameras, servers). Nothing talks to the cloud. I'd like more combo units: why don't my wifi access points also act as a ZigBee routers and have environmental monitors?

@f0x I've reverse engineered the authentication protocols for Bosch-Siemens home appliances and have released some beta quality code for local control of Home Connect devices via MQTT automation system. https://github.com/osresearch/hcpy/

@f0x
- a Google Home Mini that's turned off most of the time
- maybe one of those giant e-ink internet calendars i've seen people make? that would be cool
- honestly i'm not sure, smart home stuff has never really been attractive to me. i don't like talking to computers, i don't want an always on video camera that sends video recordings to the cloud, and i don't really care about being able to turn things on and off with my phone. but if a device can do something that isn't one of those things that's actually useful then that might be interesting
- adding computers to things seems to usually just make them less reliable and have more points of failure (the wifi/bluetooth connection, the battery, app updates, device firmware updates, etc). not to mention all the new potential security problems

- one smart bulb and my own self hosted music server communicating with my wifi-enabled speakers, echo dots, hubs, shows (although if it were my choice i’d get rid of all of them, i have the one in my room plugged out)
- some custom/self-hosted home assistant enabled thing that wakes me up in the morning and tells me what temperature it is so i can turn on the heating
- listed above
- privacy, everything sends it to another server so id have it self hosted

@f0x
- a couple of HomePod Minis, a smart lightbulb, a scale/body fat measurer, and a blood pressure cuff
- maybe a sleep monitor? I’m not very bothered though
- Better voice recognition, more smart devices that only store data locally on my phone
- I’m not keen on uploading data to remote servers, though I (mostly) trust Apple, specifically, not to lie about what they do with it
