i'm going to make v2 of the flora rotary encoder, with just WS2812B-2020 smart chainable leds, instead of the wacky led driver multiplexing

@f0x can I see what the original is? sounds neat :blobcat_owo:

with 24 tiny rgb leds, driven with a TM1640 matrix driver on the back. Unfortunately forgot to connect 2 grid lines, and the matrix driver isn't great for control either, so hence the switch to much simpler neopixels now that JLC will assemble those as well

@f0x cute & comfy!!
Also recommendation for the WS2812 LEDs after being burned myself -- put a decoupling cap beside every single LED chip, they pull current very suddenly while still repeating data and it makes it easy for them to corrupt the output stream without enough decoupling

@s0 yeah that's definitely recommended, although some of the newer types (I think only 5050 size) apparently don't need external caps anymore?

@s0 yeah I guess it's not true, I was thinking of the WS2812E but the only datasheet I could find (in Chinese), still has capacitors in the reference circuit

@f0x just as long as you don't do the one that I found where they put the cap in SERIES with the LED VCC instead of parallel to decouple.

@f0x this was discovered after 2 days of debugging, after gluing and soldering 200 of them into a set :blobcat_angery:
