Riot.im rename

Reeking of corporate all over. I don't like it. I'm generally hugely skeptical of something that needs to explode to exist.

What we need is ActivityPub for messaging, which, as I understand it, is kinda what Jabber and WebRTC are

Riot.im rename

@f0x Huge organization split across three entities with some non-profit and some for-profit. A massive unmanageable default instance server you have to do research for how *not* to use it. A single client and a single server implementation for a protocol so complex that no third party client can elegantly implement necessary functionality.

The protocol and implementations were never designed to scale to a corporate, global scale, and yet everything encourages it

@MadestMadness i guess i'll try address this point for point the best I can?

- huge organization
no
- split accross 3 entities
2, matrix foundation nonprofit for the protocol, and new vector that works on matrix stuff and owns Riot + Modular

- default instance bad
yep, fully agreed

- single client
ehh depending on needs there's quite a few others that are totally usable

- single server
yep, currently. Conduit.rs is doing well, dendrite soon(tm)

- protocol so complex
absolutely not true, the client protocol is really easy to start with, all the difficulty is in actually making a good UX client and that's the same with any protocol

- protocol not designed for scale
no

- implementation not designed for scale
yep, synapse is a grown-out proof-of-concept and sucks
