@elfi yep yep. Its a hard won lesson, don't take your ground for granted any more than you take your power rail for granted. The only thing that matters is the difference between them and EITHER can cause you pain

if they didn't star-ground their audio stuff then the surges from the CPU would have a really nice way to interfere
glancing at my board's layout the CPU and its power supplies are directly between the accessory chips (including audio) and the motherboard power supply
So yeah, ground contamination is where I'd put my money
