re: FFXIV, a How To Get Started Guide for those interested

@monsterblue @Agris I use a Windows virtual machine for FFXIV so I can't say as such, but I could possibly look into it

re: FFXIV, a How To Get Started Guide for those interested

@elfi @monsterblue How do you get gpu performance in a VM?

re: FFXIV, and now for something completely different

@Agris @monsterblue I use PCI passthrough to dedicate a video card to the virtual machine

It can be a pretty big hassle since there are numerous hardware requirements and hoops to jump through, and my setup is a bit fragile -- kernel updates can knock out my VM for a bit, and my host uses the IGP because of an access control problem and has some issues of its own

If you want to look into PCI passthrough with virtualization, I can make some recommendations, but I cannot guarantee it working on an existing setup. I'm lucky I could do it on mine since it was already secondhand but from someone who seriously overbuilds their computers

re: FFXIV, and now for something completely different

@elfi @monsterblue I'm not sure I can have the main gpu and the igp enabled at the same time. the motherboard disables it.

re: FFXIV, and now for something completely different

@Agris @monsterblue well, best idea I have there is try forcing it to initialize with the IGP in the firmware menu, then see if both devices will show up in lspci

Also note with PCI passthrough, you won't be able to use your GPU on your host OS

re: FFXIV, and now for something completely different

@elfi @monsterblue sounds like a pain in the ass

re: FFXIV, and now for something completely different

@Agris @monsterblue yeah. Frankly I'd suggest either looking up what wine tricks may be needed for FFXIV (fortunately probably few since it needs no kernel anticheat) or to dual boot. I went with PCI passthrough because I've had bad luck with wine and also muh workflow
