three options:
- keep using top-mount LEDs, which means twice as much stenciling and reflowing; lower brightness; and these LEDs are also the hardest component to solder consistently
- design a larger case so I can move the MCU out of the way
- find a different MCU board that has enough GPIO broken out AND provides USB D+/D- pins
I don't like any of these :(

it's a keyboard with full per-key RGB backlighting so I can't make any exceptions for this random key in the middle of the board unfortunately
