ACPI is so weird. Who decided that I should be able to hibernate Linux, boot Windows, shutdown windows, and resume Linux from hibernation? That's just wild that we can do that.

The only possible improvement is simply abolishing the distinction between powered and unpowered entirely. Look up intermittent computing if you are curious, no battery, no A/C wall power, no problem.

I rember over a decade ago, someone prototyped ram that has backup capacitors and fast flash memory on the pcb and on power loss, it'd dump the ram content onto the flash and then copy it back on resume.
The craziest demonstration I saw was someone pulling the power cords from a server, take out the ram, put it into another server and it just resumed.

@ranja yeah that falls into the category of "its basically batteries" but is still some impressive shenanigans.

Imagine, ypu work at home, pull the ram out of your running machine, go to the office plop it in there and continue watching your cat videos without interuption
