I feel like I'm always thinking about doing things with 3D graphics, but I'm just so darn bad at 3D modelling and it's so unintuitive and boring for me that I don't really feel like getting better at it. I wonder if I could create some sort of workflow that would involve modelling things with clay in real life and then turning them into a 3D models with photogrammetry. It's so much easier to manipulate 3D shapes with your own hands in a real 3D space than with a two dimensional mouse pointer on a computer screen.

@montagsoup there's some hololens cad stuff you might find interesting somewhere, too. AR digital sculpting?

@starless I've seen stuff like that before and it definitely seems interesting, but it also seems like it might be a bit too floaty? Like trying to sculpt a ghost or something. There's a lot of tactile feedback with clay that's really nice I think. It'd be a lot of fun to try out though. Unfortunately I don't already have a Hololens and it's definitely outside my price range, especially for hobby stuff I'm just trying out.

@montagsoup yeah. There's some tools like haptic gloves that might help.

The downside of a clay first situation is noise reduction upon getting scanned in and a loss of hierarchical geometry data that comes from the cad construction process.

It'd be really rad to see improvements on this stuff, though. There do exist 3d scanners for help with this, but it's not perfect.

@starless Yeah, noise is definitely a big thing I'm worried about, especially since clay is normally smooth and textureless and I hear photogrammetry doesn't handle that super well. I'll have to play around with different lighting and texturing techniques probably and see what works. It should be fun even if it doesn't work super well though.

@montagsoup I don't think that should be a problem. I mostly mean, like, you'd just get an stl and it would kinda amplify all the imperfections. That's the kind of noise I mean, not scanning artifacts.

You can use a spray on clay, but I think the surface should scan in okay. Use like a powder, dry shampoo spray, or metrology spray.
