one would absolutely love to be able to start a local ISP business and provide service that doesn't suck at a fair price

the other one knows that most often that legally forces you to become a data surveillance cop…

*sighs*

ISPs are too often legally forced to log everything about their network's traffic, keep it for long periods of time and share this information with cops on demand

Often also to enforce copyright infringement laws too…

Which would make me deeply uncomfortable eh

(the capital needed to start an ISP in itself isn't that crazy high with an option of renting wholesale infrastructure access)

@rail_ FWIW, the data retention laws in the EU have been struck down multiples times in courts, this seems to be the latest iteration of that: blueprintforfreespeech.net/en/

So it appears that at least within the EU, you cannot actually be forced to keep logs even for law enforcement purposes
