why is tech the only community where it's normalised for outsiders to disrespect members, and disagreeing with that gets you labelled with the new trendy "-bro" word of the day? many of you are train queers, and i know nothing about trains. if i started guessing about trains based on my limited knowledge of them, of course, that would make you a bit uncomfortable, so you'd want to explain it to me so i understand it. if i went "um actually this doesn't mean i want it explained to me, that's problematic actually", obviously i would be labelled as annoying. why is this not the case in tech spaces?

@tauon I think it's mostly to do with the motivation for explaining - in tech, there's a problem with people uselessly/patronizingly 'explaining' things to look superior rather than to actually help someone understand it. That problem does happen elsewhere too, but it seems way more prominent in tech.
And so the people who are on the receiving end of this (disproportionately women, in particular) eventually get tired of dealing with that and start setting boundaries on unsolicited explanations.

oh i definitely understand that. because i have a woman-presenting profile i've definitely had a lot of people assume i don't know things
