teachers being shitty about chromosomes and intersex conditions
teachers really just lie to students because it's convenient.
This teacher was teaching that there are no male calico cats because males always have XY chromosomes and females have XX chromosomes.
I looked it up and found that there in fact are male calico cats, usually because they have XXY chromosomes. I brought this up and the teacher was like I know that but we're not talking about that now, don't confuse them.
So you're just purposefully lying to the students?
This kind of shit is responsible for so much erasure and discrimination against intersex and trans people. It makes me angry
Wouldn't it be better to just explain the actual reality to the students? Wouldn't it be better for them to understand what's actually going on instead of teaching them a lie?
this is one of the problems I had with science classes in school. It seems like every year we were being told that something we had been previously taught was untrue. Stop fucking lying to us then?
and it's not like the science changed because they learned more. It's not like they made a mistake teaching us. They knew that what they were teaching us wasn't actually true but they did it anyway? Because it was more convenient? because it was how they were taught?
Why should I care about anything you teach me if you're willfully lying to me
@RadiantEmber The standard excuse I hear for this from teachers is that it's "necessary" because "otherwise students would be overwhelmed with all the nitty-gritty".
Which is bullshit, because it costs nothing to explicitly *tell* students that a model is simplified, and from my own teaching experience I know that this works fine, and reliably avoids this failure mode...
