Sometimes I wonder if it'd be possible to 'fork' the XMPP RFC and make a 'unofficial lite version' that doesn't have the hairy dairy parts that make it such a painful thing to implement properly, because just having the federated XML based messaging parts don't seem unreasonable on their own, it's all the extra crap on top that makes it such a monstrosity
