mastodon meta question

Huh. If you block person A, and person B then responds to you but also mentions person A somewhere, person B's message never shows up in your mentions either, despite never blocking or muting them?

Is it *supposed* to work this way?

re: mastodon meta question

@joepie91 that kinda seems like how mastodon functions from what I can tell. as to why that, I dunno

re: mastodon meta question

@jacksonchen666 That's... very weird, and unexpected, and I'm not really a fan of it... that seems like an easy way to make people feel like they're getting ignored for no reason :/

re: mastodon meta question

@jacksonchen666 (and now I'm wondering how many replies I have missed due to this)

mastodon meta question

@joepie91 pretty sure this was intentional for replies to person A, but i guess it might be more nuclear?

mastodon meta question

@lnl I can understand to some degree for replies that are primarily to person A, yeah, but just muting anything *mentioning* that person seems... like something that should probably be an opt-in thing?

mastodon meta question

@joepie91 after a quick look through my own blocklist, i very much stand by the decision to make it work that way 💀

mastodon meta question

@lnl I guess I end up using the blocking feature pretty differently because nearly all of the instances full of assholes are blocked on an instance level here

mastodon meta question

@lnl (...which, ironically, I don't think hides notifications referencing people who have been defederated from?)

mastodon meta question

@joepie91 defederating works for the most part, but it's hard to defederate whole, say, catcatnya.com, or woem.men

mastodon meta question

@joepie91 are you just blocking or are you blocking and muting? afaict if you mute a handle it mutes all posts containing that handle.

mastodon meta question

@gsuberland I've only ever clicked 'block'. What Mastodon does with that internally, I have no idea.

re: mastodon meta question

@joepie91 I have two separate options, so if you only have one then maybe it's your client doing something odd like issuing both a block and mute at the same time?

but if you have both and you're just using block, and that's resulting in all posts being completely hidden, then that's rather odd.

re: mastodon meta question

@gsuberland The latter; I've only hit 'block', definitely not 'mute'.
