I think the reason I'm okay with the rough edges of #NixOS, is that problems have a start and an end; things break in deterministic ways, so they feel debuggable and solvable, rather than just being subject to luck of the draw

yes very much, but I'm not a big fan of the error messages (and the debugger isn't the best either)
