: Spotted a flag that's one white band and one blue band and nothing else, equally-sized. Don't remember the order. Which flag might this be?

@joepie91 Democratic Poland /j

jokes on me Kraków uses that flag

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o

anyhow, I assume either Assen or Hoogeveen for your case

@eater Hm. None of these seem especially likely, I think? It was flying at a local church

@joepie91 @eater If it was attached to a church then I’m guessing it’s probably the Marian flag.

@ohno @eater Huh! I'm not familiar with this one. What's the backstory behind that flag?

@joepie91 @eater Not 100%. As far as I know, that flag is sometimes also called the Roman Catholic Church flag. I think it’s Polish in origin. The colours white and blue are apparently associated with Mary.

@ohno @eater I thought the flag of the Roman Catholic Church was white/yellow?

@joepie91 @eater The official one, yes. But there’s variants that have emerged over time in different communities.

@ohno @joepie91 yeah the white blue one is flown by the Polish Catholic Church, which still wouldn't be out of place with the amount of polish people in NL tbh

@joepie91 @ohno @eater I think you mean the Vatican city flag, which is technically not the same thing as the Catholic church - insert the appropriate amount of asterisks 😅.

Inferring from context it seems that the 'catholic church flag', being a 'Polish thing' might have been a way that Polish Catholic churches differentiate(d) themselves from other denominations? (Just a guess)

@loops @joepie91 @ohno Roman Catholic Church Banner is left, Roman Catholic Church in Poland is right, which is a Marian Flag as noted
