I don't pay attention for a couple months and suddenly NixOS seems to have gone mainstream????
@joepie91 hasn't it been for like, years, or have I been part of "the wrong circles"
@eater Definitely not to the degree that a The Register article *which is not about NixOS* mentions it in passing as one of a handful of distros, and an entire gaggle of YouTubers is going "ohhh!" and "ahhh!" about it!
@joepie91 oooh, that's wild! but, like all horrible things points at Python and capitalism it's made in the Netherlands, so I will go for unpatriotic action and deny it grounds in my house
@joepie91 in all honesty, it for me feels like the complete wrong direction to take a distro in, but that might be "old-minded youth yells at cloud"
@joepie91 my guess is that this is because there isn't a installer, so you kind of have to deal with the configuration.nix yourself, and using that makes some of the fundamental differences clear
@Gaelan @joepie91 is there? it doesn't seem obvious if so, https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_Installation_Guide doesn't mention anything at least
Perhaps the most surprising aspect here is that the various YouTubers by and large correctly describe how NixOS is *structurally* different rather than focusing just on themes and whatnot
