VPS host taking a site offline because of 'excessive traffic' (no further details).

Claims it was a DDoS attack (indeed this site wouldn't usually cause this much traffic), apparently the DDoS protection they advertise with was ineffective. SSH etc also blocked, I have to email support to get the site enabled again, which regularly takes ~5 hours to respond. They removed the logs 'because there were so many of them'.

Happened multiple times now.

How am I supposed to diagnose like this?

@raboof which host is this? I'd like to know which ones to avoid.

@winduptoy it's a small Dutch one, vimexx.nl . I have to admit I somewhat misunderstood: it wasn't their VPS package, but their 'web hosting' package. Still, locking us out without giving us the information/tools to remedy the situation is not great.

@raboof @winduptoy But also, if a provider did this to me, I'd probably start looking to move.

@joepie91 if I could wave a magic wand I definitely would, but the reality is there is no money and we have tons of other things to do in this volunteer org.

Moving the site would be relatively easy, but we also host the mailserver, webmail and some more complex applications there. We'd rather postpone a move until we can 'do it right', selecting the right supplier, sizing, and technology, migrating the data and providing good documentation to the 80 volunteers about what it means for them...
