That's why "customer acquisition" is where so much of the VC money goes, and why they love "social" stuff - it allows them to create network effects (ie. lock-in). It's all about "dominating a market".
Startups were never a grassroots anti-corporate thing. They were always just the foot in the door for *different* corporations to gain power, exploiting naive enthusiastic young folks in the process of doing so.
