Considering it's somehow becoming cheaper (rather, other cheeses are becoming more expensive), I wish the singular vegan cheese at Lidl was... better than this.

It's like if someone made a cheese but only had a vague idea of what cheese was and that their only real thought about the whole thing was based on salt content.

@whatanerd Yep, I feel this. Unfortunately none of the options here are really any better... the cumin cheese from Albert Heijn was a bit better, but in terms of 'standard' gouda-style slices, the Lidl one was actually the *better* one :(

@whatanerd Relatedly: very annoying how some vegan cheese slices have a way too low salt content, presumably because they're trying to avoid the coconut oil aftertaste, and thereby make it taste like *nothing at all*

@joepie91 These ones taste like coconut *and* salt, which is why when you said it's supposed to be gouda-style... I just gawped at my screen.

@whatanerd Yeahhhh. I've found the ones from Nurishh to be a bit closer to the real thing, but they don't seem to be available anywhere in NL. Their vegan gran padano is surprisingly good though.

@whatanerd On a brighter note: I've been pleasantly surprised by both the 'premium' vegan burgers and the vegan shoarma from Lidl. Both turned out extremely well, the resulting meal was basically indistinguishable from the real thing

@joepie91 Yeah, if you've got troubles finding things in NL, I'm pretty sure my chances in SK are closer to nil, lmao.

@whatanerd Might not be! NL is notoriously behind with vegan stuff :) It's only very recently that there's starting to be affordable vegan stuff in regular stores with any semblance of quality

@joepie91 @whatanerd Grated mozarella from nurishh is also great. I tried it this weekend and it's a first vegan cheese I've seen not only melt, but get a really pleasant brown crust when baked for some time.

@shine @whatanerd Hmm, I've not seen that one anywhere yet! I've tried the store-brand vegan mozzarella from Albert Heijn in a pasta dish, and it worked okay enough, but the taste was rather weak. Didn't try baking it though!

It probably helps that Nurishh is a brand from an actual cheese manufacturer, so they at least have people who understand how it's supposed to taste 🙃
