Forwarding this from a friend, I don't use apple and too bleh to look into it:

"Why are iPhone pictures in some weird .HEIC format and why aren't they automatically compatible with things like the online flea market I sell stuff on?"

He's just switched from android to iPhone and also uses a mac laptop. Answers in very very non-tech language please, he struggles hugely with understanding tech concepts.

@welshpixie Looks like the short answer is "because that way they take less space for the same pictures", but I have no idea how many things support it or whether it can be set to store JPEG instead
