so I keep hearing about evil langlemangle scraper bots that "use residential IP addresses" and I am kinda confused; what does this mean?

if it was a traditional criminal ddos, sure; they've got a bunch of compromised end-user laptops, but I don't think the langlemangle folks have stooped to this yet, so what's going on? do they rent IP addresses from ... comcast? and route them into their data centers, or do they have their employees running the ddos scrapes out of their homes?

what does it even mean for an IP address to be "residential"? is that a property of geoIP-type guessing that ends up guessing wrong?

I've heard of a lot of different ones of these. Some of them are more black hat than others. But yeah, there's definitely a market for it. It's pretty big.
