New Mastodon is sending my eyes funny, what's going on with the new padding around stuff? The line spacing seems different/off too? Also, the new landing page is a *garbage* idea. We all know it.

@Shrigglepuss fun fact the landing page shit also means the REST api has to be publicly exposed, so even with authorized_fetch enabled, scrapers etc can now just get the json representation of posts

@Shrigglepuss (scrapers could always parse the html views of course, but that's an extra hurdle over just getting machine-readable data)

@f0x Fuck's sake what a mess. Who even wins anything in this redesign?

@Shrigglepuss Eugen's marketing brain i suppose, which is so clearly put above community safety

@f0x @Shrigglepuss I mean he would know what's safe, solely moderating however-many users m.s fed m.o has now.

@maloki @f0x At the *very* least it should be a button away from the landing page and only show local public toots, so people from outside of the instance gets a quick overview of what they're about. Putting federated toots in there is *massively* asking for trouble

@Shrigglepuss @f0x I think the argument used to be the opposite for other reasons.

I think it's complicated to have the timelines on the front pages, without explicit opt-in from very single person who's possible be on the.
Like it has to be a setting that's of by default, and turned on by users themselves. 🤷‍♀️

@Shrigglepuss @f0x or better yet, not an option at all. 🤷‍♀️

@maloki @Shrigglepuss if it really was so important it should've been similar/merged with the profile directory feature...

@f0x @maloki That's a very good point. I'm not necessarily adverse to their being some kind of "what we're all about and who we are here" feature (but really, isn't the About page for that??), but this feels particularly badly thought through. The negative impacts far outweigh anything positive imo
