in that it's really fuckin hard to prove something is environmental, because of all the compounding factors
but if, for example, it was in our water, then shouldn't we see obesity in ocean animals, too?

@f0x probably*. this hypothesis even if wrong would be almost impossible to disprove, we really need to find one such contaminant to start evaluating it.
the fact that seed oils aren't implicated is an interesting data point, for instance. that actually helps narrow down the list of contaminants to things that do not mix well with / concentrate in seed oil, like glyphosate.
