According to this article there used to be an SSH tunnel solution for Android that worked by simulating a local OpenVPN server and then redirecting traffic through the SSH tunnel: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ssh-tunnels-alternative-vpns-russell-stringer
Sadly it looks like the app (ki4a) is both gone from Play/F-Droid and the source on GitHub hasn't been updated for years now.

@polychrome I would highly recommend using Wireguard, which does need to be set up on the server but it's super straightforward. also has an app in fdroid that works well
