Every time I try to talk to someone at work about AI I feel like Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park

Except in this case John Hammond is gleefully telling all of us that he wants the dinosaurs to eat us and that he purposefully designed the park to harm everyone who enters

There are ABSOLUTELY use cases for AI that can make the world a better place. However, the people leading the charge have promised their investors that they will avoid doing good at all costs

@robinhood I've still only seen (1) good implementation of the current technology and it's fucking shutterstock of all places

@coriander one of the applications I think would be amazing is in search and rescue. Humans are good at seeing contrast, but bad at noticing things. So, finding a small person bobbing in a massive ocean is pretty tricky for us. For an AI? Easy peasy!

I just wish we weren’t being forced to burn the world to the ground in order to get there

@robinhood @coriander large learning models (fuck calling them AI) are being used to fold proteins. This is a good use, IMHO. It can conceptually test millions of molecules looking for the few that could bond to specific receptors. Medical progress could really benefit from this. There we go. That's the One Good Use I've heard of.
