It's #October the rain is pouring down on the apple trees outside, and I'm back to bring a few pictures and stories of my recent travels in some magical spots outside my usual northern haunts.

You can't take pictures of the original copy of the Magna Carta (one of 4 surviving) inside Salisbury Cathedral, so instead have:

1. The cathedral itself, built between 1220 and 1258, with the tallest spire in the UK despite having foundations that are only 4 feet deep , straight down onto the water table.

2. The oldest working mechanical clock in the world, dating to at least 1386.

3. The extraordinary modern font, water perpetually flowing from the black, mirrored surface. Normally I like my medieval interiors to stay medieval, but I decided after a moment or two that I liked this.

4. The head of a Green Man from high up on the soaring nave ceiling, impossible to see from the ground but pointed out to me by a kind cathedral guide with a laser pointer (my camera zoom did the rest).

@northfolk The mirror surface is at least extremely evocative, and worth integrating into ideas for more period fountain designs
