Am I imagining this? Does AI stuff just suck?

I'm admittedly very biased, so I have a hard time trusting my own judgement! But there's been a few times I was like "let's give it a shot" in response to some company trying to hawk some AI thing at me.

I just tried Spotify's new AI DJ and I gave it a few shots to like, try to get something I'd like, and it mostly went into things I already faved, whatever, but then....nine inch nails? or some other weird thing that's like, completely off the mark

I kind of think part of this might be how it's sold. Like, if something tells you to try an AI thing, you're led to expect this thing to be as impressive as a person, that's what it's asking you to compare it to.

or really, if i'm being real, it's closer to asking you to expect magic, but "human" is a bit more down to earth.

and you have to be really good to pass that bar.

I feel like the way this stuff is hyped, it suggests these experiences are meant to be like, intercepting your brain waves. Like the AI DJ is supposed to know more than me and it'll blow my mind by breaking down things into numbers and mathematically finding the perfect song.

Or bing with the perfect recipe or whatever.

and when it's just some middling to disappointing result, it's more like, well all you've done is taken away control from me

@heatherhorns I'm pretty sure the issue is that we don't fit into convenient little boxes like the usual white middle-class office workers this stuff is hawked at

@heatherhorns It's pretty easy to blow your mind if your breadth of experience is wonder bread and FM radio
