Knowledge drop for young Unix users: since everything is a file, you don’t need to back up to a .tar.xz archive inside a filesystem, you can just write it directly to the raw device if you have a mind to.

This was the normal way to use tar when it was actually used with tape.

@mos_8502 that reminds me, I should look at whether compression is viable for my rsync backup disk... dunno how much of it is compressible and how much overhead I'd get to offset the benefits
