I just heard an old friend might be joining us for #CircusInPlace tonight! I'm excited, despite them knowing too many stories from my early performing days. :)

Hang out with with old friends and new in the video chat tonight starting at 8pm UTC-6, with clown shenanigans running into the wee hours:

Bad vibes, hearing

@balrogboogie you're good, though. Your post isn't wrong, it was just hard for me to read. My condition is wildly rare, no need to pull yourself back. Just a leaning experience is totally good. I'd honestly rather you kept it so there's some context for folks.

It's the kind of thing you might cw, but even then the cw would be so strange... Just maybe rephrase next time to, like "if you don't have a bass guitarist, do you really have a band?" or something, idk.

I think you just accidentally got boosted into disability masto context, and it's super reasonable for you to have not imagined phrasing like that could be upsetting. Frankly, it shouldn't be upsetting at all. But modern audiology refuses to process frequencies below 150 Hz (bass guitar ranges), and that just makes this painful for me because technologically, it makes music sound like crap.

Anyways, hi, nice to meet you, I'm Starless. 😅 👋

I promise I'm not always sad about sound. Sometimes I paint things and sometimes I build stuff. It's nice to meet you! 💙

Bad vibes, hearing

@balrogboogie ugh. I can attest, without bass, most music sounds much worse. I miss it a lot. I'm sure you weren't meaning to be accidentally ableist, but oof, this was painful to read. 😅

I can talk more about my quest for having music sound right, but I don't want to bore you with some sob story about hearing tech out of left field. If you're noticing that bass sounds are disappearing from your life, you might want to get checked for otosclerosis.

Regardless, you're not wrong. I can't hear bass guitars properly anymore and it's like there's a piece of my soul that's missing. Maybe not the way you wanted to be proved right, but.... 🙃

whats wrong with this picture

And, as if to rub it in, because this is of course a group for blind people, the image came with a description. “[Image shows Seeing the ***Ability North West in red letters... The blue *** replaces the Dis to show Ability]

So there can be no doubt about the intent of the logo. (And it’s just a terrible logo anyway, you know if it is if you have to explain the semiotics of it.)

But the hilarious thing, the way I really know this is a “tell me your organization for blind people is run by sighted people without telling me…” situation, is that this is not only a garbage idea but no one thought to take screenreaders into account. You know, that thing that the target audience is disproportionately going to use for this group.

Because with a screenreader, the name of the group is Seeing the Asterisk Asterisk Asterisk Ability.”

Not only does this make it weird and tiring to try to follow (imagine hearing that without seeing it!), it calls so much more attention to the asterisks! Wanting to draw attention away from the “dis-” and towards the “ability” is a terrible goal but if that is your goal, this is actually really counterproductive!

That makes me laugh a lot.

So let this be a lesson to you: don’t shy away from terms like “disability,” don’t do terrible graphic design, and don’t forget about screenreaders especially if blind people are your audience. And if you do all these things at once, the results are literally going to be laughable.

@feonixrift@hackers.town yeah, do they want to hire out or to make them themselves? How complex are the models and how many do they want made?

Garfield, lewd

@Anarkat@hackers.town @thegibson@hackers.town I am no coward and I believe in accessibility.

Image depiction:
Image is a digital drawing featuring a fit and large-breasted figure with an orange body and black stripes wearing a gray bikini. The breasts and cleavage are featured prominently, taking up a decent portion of the image. The figure's face is that of Garfield the cat from the Jim Davis comic strip. The background is a reddish orange color. There is text on the image that reads "You are not immune to propaganda".

@riotmuffin@kolektiva.social I had pretty good luck at cub? They might be full now, though.

Alc

@wmd@chaos.social I dunno if those are standardized, but I enjoyed it so... Maybe!

Well, friends, if you know of any opportunities at your company that are looking for tier 1 or 2 tech/software support, network monitoring, or entry level security operations monitoring, do let me know.

I'm hardworking, ethical, intelligent, self-directed, outgoing, and just weird enough to be having a real hard time.

@nobody@hackers.town I mean, they are blackbody radiators, but they're not only blackbody radiators.

Big, fusion-powered space heaters that sometimes wear out and do weird stuff. Like cause planets.

Trans awareness week, gender liberation stuff

@tammiii@queer.party that's good, too! You are also rad!

Trans awareness week, gender liberation stuff

Trans people exist and are fucking rad! They're just normal people! Who often do stuff with gender!

If you're a normal person who might want a little extra (or less or different) gender, you can be trans, too!

You're allowed to do as much or as little as you want, and to choose how and where you express yourself according to your safety! You don't need to present one way all the time if you don't want to! Your gender is yours, not everyone else's.

Let's claim this week for celebrating gender discovery instead of just 'trans awareness'. Maybe do a little something to express your gender today, or experiment with one you're curious about. Happy gender discovery week! 💙
