vanguardism / "black leaders" on TV
(TL;DR just reiterating what other Black people have already said about the "black leaders" on TV but drawing a connection between them and vanguardist leftists)
Vanguardism is the opposite of solidarity, its that patronizing person who suddenly shows up and tries to take control of the movement for their own goals which they claim were yours all along (or dismiss your goals entirely). Its that elitist notion that the people on the streets right now don't really know what they're doing and that they need to be ordered around. The classic authoritarian communist bullshit many of us have experienced in person. Sound familiar?
In that sense the people showing up on TV and claiming to be "black leaders" and then saying stuff like "what we REALLY MEAN is not abolish, just defund, and these two things are different, and defund actually means minor reforms that have already been proven to do jack shit" are essentially liberals practicing a reactionary form of vanguardism in an even more cowardly form (as if the typical left version wasn't bad enough).
The movement speaks for itself, by selecting a figurehead the establishment has chosen not to listen, they do this consciously. They know our demands, they are printed everywhere, they're online day and night, on our signs in the broadcasts and on twitter, they aren't blind. Don't fall for the vanguardist trap and let these self-appointed "leaders" water down the demands, because as Boots-Riley said at the Juneteenth Oakland event, "we create the wealth, wealth is power, we have the ability to withold that power". And as soon as that becomes clear, the establishment knows exactly what demands it has to actually address.
We're shutting down the ports and workplaces, we're tearing down the monuments to slavery and colonialism, and we're making the cops run home with their tails between their legs. Direct action is what gets the goods.
